Impact testing of very heavy payloads containing embedded electronics & IMUs to determine the performance of engineered metamaterial foams - to optimize damping while reducing weight and size.
Designed and built a large rooftop gantry to safely and automatically release heavy payloads up to 100lbs from a height of 50ft.
Setup saves floor space and is low-cost, and will stay as a permanent facility for real-world impact testing
Setup high-speed Phantom cameras to track the motion in 3D and determine velocity, acceleration, damping etc.
Content is a teaser for more to come
Fully inkjet-printed lattice structures with a network of interconnected soft pipes that can be pressurized to change mechanical damping and stiffness.
This can one day be a part of robots that require active changes in damping depending on operating conditions.
It is a way to integrate strain sensing into 3D structures to detect deformation states.
A fully-printed manufacturing modality allows integration of such sensing capabilities even in deep-seated locations without extra processing steps
